Tools for Smartphone Field Data Collection

The course covers a basic work flow for creating digital data collection forms and collecting GPS data in the field using a smartphone or tablet. The one-day workshop utilizes free or very low cost web tools and smartphone apps (for iPhone or Android devices).

The workshop will provide:

  • Hands-on instruction on data collection using an iOS or Android smart device (using free/low cost apps).
  • Hands-on practice collecting geospatial field data including waypoints and tracks.
  • Instruction on accessing and using CT's public domain mapping data online.
  • Introduction to several free software tools (Track Kit, JotForm, Google Maps My Maps) to manage and display digital forms and GPS data.
  • Hands-on experience in creating interactive web maps.
  • Tips for sharing and embedding maps on the web.

Registration & Details

Class size is limited to 15 students.

Participants are encouraged to bring their iOS or Android smart device with them (must be cellular compatible). A few extras will be on hand for those who do not own their own device. All apps used in the class are free or low cost (less than $5).

This workshop runs from 9 AM - 4 PM. Course fee is $125.
