- Abstract:
-
LANDSAT Thematic Mapper (TM) satellite imagery based land cover classification, circa 2006, for the state of Connecticut including local watersheds that intersect the state boundary, and towns in south central Massachusetts that are part of the Quinebaug and Shetucket Rivers Valley National Heritage Corridor. The classification depicts 12 land cover categories. These are: 1. Developed, 2. Turf & Grass, 3. Other Grasses 4. Agriculture 5. Deciduous Forest, 6. Coniferous Forest, 7. Water, 8. Non-forested Wetland, 9. Forested Wetland, 10. Tidal Wetland, 11. Barren Land, 12. Utility Corridors. Source Landsat TM image data were from July 17, 2006 (due to a malfunction with the Scan Line Corrector mechanism in the Landsat ETM sensor on May, 2003, ETM images are collected with gaps along the edges of the scenes. These can be corrected by filling in the gaps with images collected from adjacent dates. Fortunately, three contiguous dates of Landsat image data (July 1, July 17, and August 2) were collected with minimal claoud cover to produce a gap filled image data product used for the 2006 classification). The classification was compiled using ERDAS Imagine 9.2 by the Center for Land use Education And Research (CLEAR) in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Connecticut.
- Purpose:
-
To provide a synoptic view of general land cover for the greater Connecticut area circa 2006. The data is for general information purposes only and is not suitable for site-specific studies or litigation. The classification is intended for use in general, area-wide analysis that can tolerate the errors and inaccuracies within the data.
- Supplemental_Information:
-
NOTE: While derived from CCL v 1.02 land cover, this land cover classification is considered an update and upgrade to CCL v 1.02 land cover. This land cover is not compatible or comparable with CCL v 1.02 land cover products.

CROSS-CORRELATION ANALYSIS: The 2006 land cover was derived from a base 2002 land cover using Cross-correlation Analysis (CCA). This method was developed by EARTHSAT, Inc. Cross-correlation works by using the land cover categories identified in the base land cover image (2002) to derive an "expected" class average spectral response from another set of image data (2006 Landsat). This information is used to derive a Z-statistic for each pixel falling within a given land cover type. The Z-statistic describes how close a pixel's response is to the "expected" spectral response of its corresponding class value in the land cover image. Pixels that have undergone change between the date of the land cover image and the Landsat image will produce high Z-statistic values while pixels that have not changed will produce low Z-statistic values. The benefit of this technique is that it eliminates the problems associated with radiometric and phenological differences that are so readily experienced when performing change detection.

APPLICATION OF CCA: Cross-correlation Analysis was applied to the 2006 Landsat image based on five groupings of the 2002 land cover. These are: (1) water, (2) deciduous forest, coniferous forest, and forested wetlands, (3) turf & grass, agriculture, and other grasses, (4) barren, and (5) non-forested and tidal wetlands. These groupings were selected because they exhibit similar spectral characteristics. For each land cover grouping from the 2002 land cover, those pixels were extracted from the 2006 Landsat image. The "expected" class average spectral response was then calculated. The expected value is used to derive a Z-statistic for each pixel. The Z-statistic describes how close an individual pixel's spectral response is to the "expected" spectral response. Pixels that have undergone change between the 2002 land cover image and the 2006 Landsat image will have a high Z-statistic value while pixels that have not changed will have low Z-statistic values. Take for example, a pixel that was classified as forest in 2002 and developed in 2006 would have a large Z-statistic because of the difference in the spectral characteristics between an "expected" forest pixel in 2006 and the existing developed pixel in 2006. Using visual analysis, extracted pixels were compared to the 2006 image data to determine the threshold between probable change pixels (above threshold) and no-changed pixels (below threshold). Those pixels identified as changed were extracted from the 2006 Landsat image. This procedure was followed for each of the five land cover goupings.

CLASSIFICATION: For each of the five land cover groupings, ISODATA unsupervised classification was performed to identify the category to which each change pixel now belonged. After each of the five land cover groupings were classified and labeled, they were combined into a single classification layer. This layer was further edited using on-screen digitizing to eliminate apparent errors.

COMBINE CLASSIFICATIONS: The 2006 changed pixel classification was merged with the 2002 land cover to produce an updated 2006 land cover classification consistent with the 2002 land cover.

NEW FOR VERISON 2.02 ----- INCLUSION OF AGRICULTURAL FIELDS: Five existing land cover maps (1992 MRLC, 2000 NLCD, GAP, LERIS 1990, and LERIS 1995) for Connecticut were compared to identify agricultural areas. Where three or more of these land cover maps agreed, and the CCL 2006 land cover map identified Other Grasses, then the pixels were relabeled as Agricultural Fields. These agricultural areas were compared to NAIP high resolution color imagery collected in 2006 and to the original 2006 Landsat image to determine if the area was agriculture. Any errors were identified and labeled appropriately.

NEW FOR VERISON 2.02 ----- CONVERSION OF DEVELOPMENT TO VEGETATION: Due to the process of classifying multiple years of Landsat image data that make up the Connecticut's Changing Landscape dataset, and following the assumption that the devloped category will not convert to other land cover categories over time, it was found that the developed category was being over estimated, particularly in the highly urbanized areas. To reduce the amount of development classified, pixels identified as development in the most recent Landsat data (from 2006) were extracted and reclassified as either development, turf & grass, or deciduous forest. These were then embedded in each of the five dates of land cover (1985, 1990, 1995, 2002, 2006). The result was a better representation of the development and vegetative patterns in the land cover maps, particularly in the highly urbanized areas.

The 12 land cover categories represent general land cover features as they existed during the time of the Landsat Thematic Mapper image collection. These categories were selected based on the constraints of the source imagery, but also on the goals of the project. By maintaining general land cover categories, it can be expected that thematic accuracy will be higher.
